Christ’s Teaching on the Lord’s Supper Aug 5, 2018

Jesus gave us the Lord’s Supper in order to keep Christian believers from thinking that their faith is only about their personal communion with Christ. Communion is also with Christ’s church today and with those who have gone before us and will follow us. The grace of God in Jesus is mediated to us through Christ’s church requiring a communal experience of God’s mercy and love to us. The Lord’s Supper breaks the modern evangelical heresy of my salvation is just a “me and Jesus” personal relationship.

I. PAST: Self-examination –

A. The Lord’s Supper connected spiritually to the Passover

1. The blood of the Lamb delivered from death –

2. The Blood of the Eternal Son of God delivers us from the wages of sin – ;

B. Preparation for receiving the Lord’s Supper is self-examination –

1. Am I betraying the Lord in my heart and life?

2. Eleven disciples questioned themselves –

3. They did so with grief and sorrow –

4. True repentance toward God results in the fear of God, the desire to make restitution, and changed behavior!

C. Failure to examine oneself results in tragic destruction of one’s life –

1. Repentance leads to life –

2. False repentance places our souls in jeopardy –

3. Sin and iniquity lead only to ruin –

II. PRESENT: Partaking of Jesus’ Body and Blood –

A. The bread and cup are a sign pointing to Christ’s broken body and shed blood

1. The bread and the cup are so connected to the body and blood of Jesus Christ that to partake of the one is to partake of the other –

2. Partaking of these elements does not save! Only repentance to God and faith in Christ saves – ;

B. The Lord’s Supper seals to us all that Christ died to accomplish for us

1. The Holy Spirit seals to us what Christ died to apply to us –

III. FUTURE: Christ’s Intercession –

A. Why was Peter restored?

1. Jesus prayed for him –

2.The Lord’s Supper points to Christ and seals His grace to us – ;

B. The Lord’s Supper assures us that our place at the marriage supper of the Lamb is guaranteed –
